Steven Carl Vires, 66, passed away suddenly Sunday, May 15th in his home in South St. Louis County. Steve was born in Columbia, Missouri to Barbara Jean Vires (née Bertrand) and Carl Eugene Vires, and the family moved to St. Louis while Steve was at a young age. A 1974 graduate of Lindbergh High School and a 1977 graduate of the University of Missouri, Steve was a standout football player at Lindbergh and a walk-on for Mizzou Football. Steve graduated from Mizzou with his Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism. After college, Steve eventually moved back to the St. Louis area to start his career and family, but his heart never really left Columbia. Steve was a diehard supporter of Mizzou athletics and loved making the pilgrimage to Columbia at least once a year to take in a Tiger football home game. In his later years, Steve started traveling the country in his RV, and took yearly trips to watch the Tigers in road games at every NCAA Southeastern Conference school since they joined the SEC in 2012. Steve is survived by his son, Alex Steven Vires, and daughter-in-law, Grace Malench Vires, of Tower Grove Heights, who are expecting their first son next month. SERVICES. Having known Steve for the past 40 years (having first met Steve in my mid-20s in his hometown of Columbia when I was in grad school, then having seen him monthly in St Louis for many years as an original member of our film group that is still ongoing and watching sports at his place), I will remember Steve for his good company and his good character: his consistent respect shown myself and his friends, his consistent generosity to others, and his dedication to taking care of his family (ranging from son Alex to his parents to an elderly aunt). You will be missed by many, Steve. I do hope to see you on the other side.
Sorry to hear of your passing. We were but school mates all throughout our years. Your dad taught me PE at Concord school, and I knew your mom at high school. You are too young to leave us but to God, his will. You will be remembered.
Just learned of Steve’s passing. So very sorry. When we spoke at Christmas he was so excited to become a grandfather this June and said he would send baby pictures. When I didn’t hear from him in June, I thought he was likely too busy playing doting grandpa to send photos. I became worried when he didn’t answer emails. I’m heartbroken for Alex and Grace and the beautiful grandchild who won’t get to know their grandpa.
