Beloved husband of the late Mary Grass (nee Auck); loving father of Steven (Debbie) Grass, Kathleen (Joe) Gallagher and Martha (Tim) Vosse; dear grandfather of James (Stefanie) Castro, Mario Gallagher, Tim and Jennifer Miller, Ashley, Taylor and Brenna Vosse; dear great-grandfather of Abbi Gallagher, Logan Vance, Arianna Gallagher, Jake, Hailey and Ava Castro.
Mr. Grass was a meat cutter for over 45 years, he was a Boy Scout leader, sports coach, volunteer for St. Vincent DePaul Society and Meals on Wheels and a devout Catholic, who prayed the rosary and attended mass daily.
Services: Visitation at St. John Paul II Catholic Church (4980 Heege Rd. 63123) Friday November 11, 9:30 AM until funeral mass at 11:00 AM. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials to St. Patrick’s Center or St.Vincent DePaul Society appreciated. A service of KUTIS AFFTON CHAPEL
He’ll be missed! I always tell people the story of many of us sitting in his back yard in lawn chairs with blankets around in early spring of the flood of 1973 after almost sub coming to carbon monoxide poisoning. And of coarse we had plenty of bacon!!
I remember uncle Jimmy as a gentle, genuine man. I remember his vegetable gardens. I remember him as soft spoken and sincere. As his nephew, I too remember that cool day sitting in lawn chairs in their yard recovering from carbon monoxide poisoning during the flood of 1973.
Jimmy’s death, less than two weeks after my mother’s death, prolongs and seems to add to the grieving I have been experiencing.
Uncle Jimmy, you will be missed.
Jim is a St. Mary’s High School Alumnus, Class of 1948. On behalf of St. Mary’s faculty, staff, and students, both past and present, we extend our most heartfelt sympathy to Skip’s family and friends.
Also know that we share in your sorrow and grieve for your loss. Special mention and offerings of condolences to Jim’s classmates and to those students, who at one time or another, were either upper classmates or under classmates of his, and who may have known him personally or “of him” as someone they passed in the hallways, shared a table with at lunchtime or maybe even participated in some of the same extra-curricular activities as Jim did from the time he enrolled as a Freshman in September of 1944 until the time he graduated as a Senior in June of 1948.
Although Jim is gone from this life, his spirit has been and always will be here on the Campus of St. Mary’s. And just as it was in life ever since the day he enrolled and became a “Son of Mary”, daily prayers will continue to be said and daily masses will continue to be offered for him by the Brothers of Mary.

Mr. Grass was my softball coach. I attended St. Cecilia elementary school in south St. Louis, MO. I believe that Mr. Grass was our CYC coach from 5th grade through 8th grade. Kathy, his daughter was my classmate.
Mr.Grass was kind, supportive and a smart coach. He taught me the game and patiently helped me to become a skilled 2nd base player. Most importantly, Mr. Grass taught me about respect for others, whether my teammates or opposing players, empathy for those around us, and how volunteering of oneself can have a profound impact on one’s life. I’ve treasured his support all my life. Thank you to Kathy and family for sharing your Dad with me when I was young. You were truly blessed with such a special Daddy.
He will always be in my heart.
