Matthew William Wecke died November 22, 2020 at Evelyn’s House, due to metastatic esophageal cancer, at the age of 57.
Matt was born December 8, 1962 in St. Louis to Joan and Herman Wecke. He was the second of three boys, Rick the eldest and Chris the baby.
Matt was preceded in death by his father, Herman, and mother, Joan. He is survived by his amazing wife Linda, daughter Abbey (husband Dave), and two sons Alex (wife Sarah) and Steven (wife Katelyn). His legacy will live on through his grandchildren Nora, Carter, Noah, Liam, Anna, and soon to be grandbaby number 6.
Matt was always willing to help others, especially when it included his love of building things from scratch. Not only did he build anything Linda could imagine, but he instilled this sense of selflessness that created a family that thrived on one another. Always willing to help, he will not only be in our memories, but in the homes we live in that would not be the same without his helping hand.
Matt had a love for the game of soccer. From watching his father play in the professional St. Louis league, to playing the sport himself, to teaching not only his children but also coaching hundreds of young men and women at Notre Dame and St. Marys. He also had a love for golf and would spend as much time as he could on the links. He loved playing with his children and jumped at any opportunity to play with them.
Due to the Covid pandemic we will not be holding a service at this time. Matt had a distaste for funerals and we will celebrate with an outdoor extravaganza at a future date. Please hold on to your memories and when we are able to gather again, we would love to hear about and relive the great times we were able to spend with Matt. We will update this notification when we have more information and feel safe to gather with all of his loved ones and friends.

Some of you may know me some of you not. I am the big brother of John Shore and Mark Shore. Matt and Chris were our neighbors in St Louis on Wilmington street for a decade. I was a little older than they were. I can tell you though that I gained two extra brothers the year we moved in to our house. Matt and Chris.
I just had this memory of seeing Matt break his collar bone one summer during a base ball game he and my brother John were playing in. I know we had a blue truck so it must have been around 1970 or so?
After the incident I would go to his house everyday and try and keep him company. I felt so bad that the summer was going on and he was stuck there on that couch! I felt as one would for a little brother.
This writing of mine brings back the memory for me at least of a brief moment that I shared with Matt.

The brace you received was made to blend
Like flesh, but wasn’t fooling anybody
The sun broke into a smile the next day
The summer played out its joke
You lay out on the couch
Watching seventies cartoons
The T.V. colors were off
I came to your side
Nearly everyday for a week or two
Around your mom’s oval coffee table
You watched as Hot Wheel cars gave chase
Constantly making their left turns to no where
The summer called us out
Your brother and my two
Fuzz ball, hot walks on
St Louis side walks
Down to Marquette pool
Then….just like that…

I am so sorry about your loss and will keep you and your family in my prayers.
I was privileged to work with Matt for 30+ years. A man of honor and integrity does not come close to describing Matt. I could always count on Matt’s word being gospel. Whoever worked with him quickly learned this as well. – whether it be a client, general contractor, or fellow tradesman.
Probably the best Testament I can give Matt is that the GC demanded Matt on the Soldier’s Memorial project. This from the same GC Superintendent that ar times frustrated Matt (and I’m sure vice versa) at the Chase Residences. Matt was successful at some of the toughest projects that we did. Never once did I worry about a. Project when Matt was in charge.
He was very special to me and I will remember him always. Not often do people like Matt cross into our lives. Mike Fogarty

Matt and his brother Chris were/are my two best friends ever (Rick was okay too I guess), but we often got on his nerves as little brothers will do growing up. Anyway, I was often a competitor against Matt and often would come up on the short end, as little brothers often do. He was always a tough out, but always fair and always humble, unlike Chris. If there were ever a perfect couple it was Matt and Linda. They were truly a match made in heaven and I always thought of them as perfect. I admired him/them for that as little brothers do.
Love you Matt & Linda, Chris & Becky, and all your kids and grandkids. What a legacy you’ve built and I admire, as little brothers do.
Dear Linda and family. I am heartbroken that we all had to say goodbye to Matt. He was always so thoughtful and helpful and an absolute gentleman to me. I will always remember him with fondness. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this trying time.
Matt was a big brother to me as if my three bio brothers were not enough. My favorite memory of Matt is when the five of us were playing in their metal horse tank pool and Chris and Mark were teasing me relentlessly. Matt “pantsed” Chris, throwing his swim trunk so far it seemed all the way across the street. Before I could fully relish his unexpected rebuke though, he dunked my head so I wouldn’t see Chris’s nakedness as he retrieved his pants without first grabbing his towel! Good times, big brother. Circa 1976 or so.
I met Matt in high school and had the privilege of playing along side of Matt at Cleveland, playing against him in college, and coaching against him a few times. He will be missed!!
