Joan Marie Thompson, nee Schmidt, age 83, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away on April 20th, 2023, peacefully and surrounded by family.

Joan was born on June 19, 1939 in St. Louis, Missouri to Ruth and Marvin Schmidt. She attended Bayless High School where she met her future husband, Thomas Thompson, and they graduated together in 1957. They got married two years later, on May 2, 1959 – which was Derby Day, as her father lamented. To celebrate, they bet on Tommy Boy, a longshot who won it all.

She worked at St. Mary’s hospital as a medical staff secretary until 1995, nearly 20 years. After their young retirement, Joan and Tom enjoyed traveling the world together, where they made many new friends along the way. Joan was active in her church community, where she frequently volunteered. She was an avid story-teller, gardener, and a dear friend to many.

Described by those around her as full of life, Joan’s spirit is carried on by her husband of 63 years, Thomas; her three children, Diane (Mike) Fitzgerald, Robert (Julie) Thompson, Donna (K.C.) Stonner; her grandchildren, Lindsey (Alek) Wegmann, Casey Fitzgerald, Haley (Sam) Freer, Claire Stonner, Kelley (James) Finders, Kelsey Fitzgerald, Ellen Stonner; and four great-grand children.

Service will be held at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church on Friday, April 28, with a visitation beginning at 10am and service at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Joan’s name to the Saint Louis Zoo or the Humane Society of Missouri.
