Born in Caruthersville, Mo on May 31, 1935 to the late Luther B. and Veronica (nee Brunnert) Johnson, beloved husband and best friend of Eleanor M. (nee Ruzicka) Johnson; loving father of Terri (Tim) Wolk. Sandi (Mike) Timmons, John Johnson, Michael (Peggy) Nice and Debbie (Mike) Redd; cherished grandpa of Parker (Tara) Timmons, Emily (Justin) Lamar, Paige (Chuck) Lauder, Alex (Brianna) Wolk. Meghan Redd, Michael Nice, Drake Johnson, Madison Johnson, Abby Nice, Andrew Nice and Madelyn Redd and Great-Grandpa of 7; treasured brother of Margaret (Earl) Coppage, Paul (the late Martha) Johnson, Agnes ( the late Jerry) Cobb, Mike (Trudy) Johnson, Pat (Maryann) Johnson, Chris (Wannie) Johnson, Gerry Johnson and the late Richard (Survived by Barbara) Johnson, Joseph (survived by Dotty) Johnson and Gertie (the late Wayne) Morlan; our dear brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, cousin, coach and friend to many.
John was a faithful member of Immaculate Conception Church in Arnold, the Knights of Columbus Counsel # 6018 and proudly served his country as a Navy Corpsman during the Korean War and a pro-life advocate. He was an avid sportsman and coached many teams through the years, often stepping in when others couldn’t, his greatest joy was spending time with his family, whom he cherished. Gone….. but never forgotten, rest in peace.
A memorial Visitation to celebrate John’s life will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Arnold on Friday, March 18, from 9 a.m. until time Mass 10 a.m. Interment to follow at J.B. National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers masses preferred, but also donations to St. Vincent DePaul Society or a charity of your choice appreciated. Mr. Johnson was the best coach I ever had! He coached us for 3years in grade school and later in high school for Big League baseball. He was always willing to pitch batting practice or hit us grounders and fly balls. I felt like he would do anything to help us succeed. The world would be a much better place if it had a few more Mr. Johnsons!

My earliest and fondest memory of John was during my early elementary years (probably 2nd or 3rd grade). He came home on military leave and came to school in his Navy Whites Medical Corp Uniform and obtained permission from our school principal (probably Sister Mariam Therese) for early release from school. John took us around town, bought us milk shakes and took us to park playground. I remember being proud of John and felt sort of like a celebrity for getting out of school early.
A more recent memory of John was in 2015 when we had an early 80th birthday celebration for John at Paul’s house in Leesburg and most of his siblings (Margaret and Earl, Aggie and Les, Mike and Trudy, Chris and Wannie, Paul, Mary Ann and I and Jerry Wayne and, of course, Eleanor) were present. We all had a great time with some great pictures (I could not figure out how to post pictures on this site).
Both John’s and Ricard’s military service played a major role in my decision to enter the military. One of the most important decisions in my life as it allowed me to grow as a person, allowed me to go to UF with the GI Bill where I met Mary Ann.
Thank you John for being a really good Big Brother for all these years.
I’m so sorry about the passing of Johnny. I really don’t remember if I ever met him but feel as if I knew him in a way. I am the niece of Jerry Cobb, late husband of Aggie, Johnny’s sister. My uncle, Jerry, loved the Johnson family and spoke of them often. My prayers are with his family. May God give peace in this time of loss.
Johnny, the oldest of us 11 kids brings many fond memories. When I was 6 to 7 years old he started teaching and practicing baseball with me. To this day I still remember Johnny making me field 10 grounders in a row, without making an error before we would quit for the day. Also he was the one who introduced us to Jack’ Boat House’ where we would go trout fishing. Johnny and some of us other brothers had great times on other fishing trips. And lastly Johnny let me stay with him and his family for about 6 months when I worked in St. Louis, and this work experience help me to decide to enroll at SEMO. While at Cape G. Johnny would occasionally drop by with a care package for me and roommates, a six pack and large Pizza. Johnny was not just a big brother but a mentor as well.
I will miss Johnny as many others will. May God bless him and his Family.
