Herbold, William L. Age 75, Monday, November 30, 2020. Beloved husband of Janet M. Herbold (nee Johannes); dearest father of Heather Herbold; loving grandfather of Thomas and Hannah; dear step-father of Tammy (Adam) Morgan, Debby (John) Hylla and Denny (Heather) DeGreeff; dear step-grandfather of Wil, Reid, Grace, Andrew, Tyler and Chase; dear brother of Leah (Larry) Shoemaker; our dear brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend.
William was born to Raymond E. and Gladys Marie Herbold in Sistersville, WV. He graduated from Sistersville high, then went on to attend Marshall University. He graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN then was drafted into the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant and served as an optometrist. After honorable discharge from the Navy, William established practice as an optometrist and was in practice for 53 years. William had many interests and skills. He was well known across country as talented gunsmith and woodworker, and he could fix anything. If there something was broken or needed repair, the grandkids would always say “Paw paw will fix it”.

Heather, I first saw this on Facebook, and when I showed it to my wife Dini, she cried. He was our doctor and dear friend until his recent retirement. We loved seeing him and visiting with him when we had an appointment. We will miss him and remember him for the wonderful man he was. So very sorry for your loss.
Prayers for your family Heather, we have been going to him forever. My husband Jim and him would talk hunting, he was a friend and such a great person and Doctor, he will be missed.
Our entire family was blessed to know Doc Herold. Loved how he shared his love for family, the outdoors and helping people with his expertise in Optometry. We will miss you! To Heather, Janet and the rest of the family please know you are in our prayers.
My heart is broken to hear this sad news. I am a dear friend of Debby’s and long time friend of the family and new Bill from the beautiful beginning of him and Janets first date. He was such an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. My mother also was a patient of Bills and spoke so highly of him and how kind he was. When I worked at clarkson, Doc was one of the reasons I got excited to go into the office. He was always positive, made the staff and patients laugh, and always was there to help us out. My deepest condolences to his family. Rest in peace.
Dr. Herbold was our optometrist for years and became the eye doctor for our daughters and their families. He was always so friendly and compassionate. I had slight cataracts, and he suggested I have them removed so I could get lens implants. Before that I couldn’t even read the big E on the eye chart. Now, for the first time in my life I could see the clock across the room without grabbing my glasses. He was just a great guy. Our whole family’s condolences…

My daughter just showed me Bill’s obit today. I am deeply saddened at your loss. It is such a shock. I just saw him the week before he retired at my appointment. We always talked about our kids and I shared pics of our grandson with him. He was my doc for over 35 years. He was so proud of his family and the time he spent with them. I am sooo sorry that the world has lost such a great man and Doctor! I was a patient of Dr. Herbold’s for years and many of my family members also saw him yearly. He was one of the kindness Doctor’s I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. His bedside manner was above and beyond the care for his patient’s! I’m shocked and truly saddened. He spent his entire life caring for others and finally retired beyond his time, I don’t understand why God takes such people early? He will never be forgotten. Thank you Dr. Herbold for being a great person and Doctor the world has lost a one of a kind human being!

Rest in Peace, Dr. Herold. My condolences to his many friends and his family. My wife and I have been Doc’s patients for over 35 years. He was the kindest, friendliest, most professional doctor I have ever had the privilege of knowing. My family will miss him dearly.
I am just learning for the passing of Dr. William Herbold. We were lucky enough to have him as our family optometrist since little one. He not only treated both my parent, both brothers and myself. I was lucky enough for him to also treat my niece, and my own children and husband as well. I was so lucky to see him one of his last days working before retirement and talk a while with him about the fun things he would get to do with his grandchildren whom he loved to talk about dearly. We even joked it would be nice to run into each other at a hockey rink in the future. To say we all will miss him is an understatement. RIP Dr Herbold. You truly will be missed..
Dr. Herbold was a multi-generation Dr. for my Mom and I. He was a friendly Dr. that always had a great story. He dressed like the true professional he was and was thorough with everything he did. He will be sorely missed. I’m sorry he worked 53+ years but had such a short retirement. That part I feel very sad about. He Loved and spoke about his family. One thing is for sure, Heaven received a very qualified Dr. to help out. RIP Dr. Herbold and GOD Bless your Family.
My sincere condolences to your family. I have thought of Bill and his sister many times since the last time I saw them. Our parents were friends in Sistersville WV and I spent many hours at their house as a young kid. We used to climb on the oil derricks and play near the Ohio River. The last time I saw Bill I was probably 10 years old I’m now 72 but never forgot his kindness and the fun we used to have.

We just learned today of Doc’s passing! Needless to say, I was shocked, stunned and mostly speechless when I heard this awful news. Bill Herbold was the best combination of men–a gentleman, kind and caring, he loved his family unconditionally, he was a very skillful gunsmith and a wonderful optometrist who cared deeply for his patients, many of whom he called his friends. When he told me he planned to retire last year, I was upset. When I learned of his passing just 33 days after his retirement, I was crestfallen for our loss of a friend and doctor but especially for the heartbreak of his loving wife, Janet, daughter Heather, and his other beloved family members. RIP Bill Herbold. You were one of a kind and your smile and sense of humor are truly missed.

Janet & Heather, he got so little retirement! Bill & I were friends for almost 40 years. His loss hurts, as you well know. To me, a favorite remembrance. Before he retired, I joked with him about whether his replacement would ever be able to use Bill’s “real alternate” lenses. Bill was old school, as I will remember him. Another good man gone.

I just was made aware of Docs passing and am very saddened. Saying he was an amazing man is an understatement. He was so happy, kind and just loved people and people loved him! I came to work with him at his office and I was a very curious nursing student. Doc was always more than willing to teach me anything I wanted to know. You will forever hold a place in my heart, Doc.

Just today I learned of Dr. Herbold’s passing. I am so sorry to hear this. He was a GREAT doctor and I referred so many people to him. He had a great “bedside” manor if you will. Always took his time and answered all questions. Very patient man. Prayers for his family.
To the family of Dr Herbold from the Parks family, our thoughts to you. I did not hear of his retirement until after it happened nor was I aware of his passing until I was at the office for an appointment earlier this year and was told what happened. Dr Herbold was my first and only optometrist from age 17 until he retired, close to 40 years time. His kindness, caring attitude and general good human that he was kept me coming back, had me taking my family to him once I had one, my mother in law would travel from Granite City to see him and many others I recommended to him too. I was blessed to know him and will always have good memories of him too.
