Beloved husband for 50 years of Vivian Gilyon (nee Impellizzeri); loving father of Michael (Susan) and Christopher (Emily) Gilyon; dear grandfather of Jacob and Samuel Gilyon; dear brother of Darlene (Robert) Gildersleeve ; dear brother-in-law, uncle and friend to many.
Mr. Gilyon was a retired sergeant from the St. Louis County Police Department and a retired Command Sergeant Major with the Missouri National Guard. He was an avid golfer, bowler and fisherman, but his greatest love was his family.
Services: Visitation at KUTIS AFFTON Chapel 10151 Gravois, Monday March 27 9:00 AM until services at 11:00 AM. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials to St. Louis County Police Welfare Association appreciated.
I was fortunate to have worked with Tom several times. He was my mentor as a bomb tech. He was a confidant when we worked together on the street. He was fair, trustworthy and honorable.Anyone who could call Tom “friend” was blessed. Rest easy my friend.
I’m grateful to have met Tom and bowled against him for years. Such an amazing person.

It was a pleasure working both for Tom as a patrolman and with him as a Sergeant. He certainly was a great coach for many young officers. You will be missed.
I met Tom professionally when he was assigned to the Arson and Explosives Unit of the County Police Department, and worked with him many times. He was also a nearby neighbor and his two sons were friends with my younger son, and we saw them and Tom frequently. Tom was a very professional, hard working, caring, patriotic, stand up guy that was well respected in law enforcement and for his many years of military service. My sincerest condolences to Tom’s family, former co-workers and his friends. I met Tom in 1969 when I came on the St Louis County Police Department and we were part of the “Triple Digit” group of Officers!
We were in the Detective Bureau during the same time period years later, my being in Narcotics and he being in Bomb and Arson. He was always a friendly guy , very personable and a good Detective!
He struck a good image and was a true asset to the Department. I left the Department and went to work for Budweiser and when I relocated back to St Louis after retiring in 2012 I would see Tom at various retiree meetings and functions, and he was always smiling and friendly.
I’ll miss him as one of the “Triple Digits,” as we continue to dwindle in our numbers, and also as a good Police Officer with him being a friend of many years even when our employment separated us for decades! So Salute to you Tom, as you report in for your first Heavenly roll call with our many former Brothers and Sisters from the “Thin Blue Line!,” knowing that you’re in good company….
Rest in Eternal Peace my friend and my fellow County Mountie, and I’ll see you on the flip side! Salute!

Tom was my first cousin and my Godfather. He held me as an infant, and knew me well, into my adulthood. I spent a lot of time with him at his home, and mine, growing up. I was always welcomed and loved, by him and our family. He was always so supportive of me, and he believed in me. I always felt like I had a safe and loving place, with him, and Viv, the boys, and all of our family. I will always treasure the memories that were made. (Playing wiffle ball, in your backyard & all of the wonderful food!) I’m so thankful to have had you, in my life! I love you, Tom!

My condolences to Sgt. Gilyon’s family. I had the pleasure working for Sgt. Gilyon early in my career as a Neighborhood Police Officer in the Affton Precinct. Sgt. Gilyon always had his officers back and was a great mentor for me as a young officer. We play countless rounds of golf at River Side golf course and in the Welfare Association golf tournament. Mike and Chris your dad is a great man and will be truly missed. Rest in peace Sgt. Gilyon.
My condolences to Tom’s family. I knew Tom from the department bass club. I did not have the privilege to work with Tom as he worked south and I worked north in the department.
I always envied his ability to catch fish and pass on where and how he caught them. It was a learning experience.
He was always friendly.
Tom will be deeply missed by my wife, myself, and all of his cousins and cousins-in-law. He was a good husband, father, and person. Our sympathy and condolences go out to our cousin Vivi and her sons Mike and Chris, and their families for their loss. I wish we would have spent more time together when we had the opportunity, however, I’m sure we will meet again in God’s presence. He will be remembered always. So long cuz.
P.S. Put in a good word for us to the ‘Big Guy’. Lord knows Cheetie doesn’t need help but I sure can use it.
