John F. Carter, M.D. passed away peacefully in the company of his five surviving children April 23, 2023. Dr. Carter was born September 15, 1931, to Dr. James and Elizabeth (Dillon) Carter in Rockville Centre, N.Y. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Loretta (Smith) Carter, with whom he had six children, Jim (Nancy) Carter, Michael “Mickey” Carter (deceased), Michele Carter Dunn, Kate Carter Gage, John (Angela) Carter and Erin (Bill) Brasser. Dr. Carter is also survived by his eighteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and his brother Rev. James C. Carter, S.J. of Grand Coteau, La. John was preceded in death by his brother Dr. Anthony Carter. Dr. Carter graduated from St. Stanislaus High School in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. He earned his undergraduate degree from Loyola University-New Orleans in 1952 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Saint Louis University Medical School in 1956. Dr. Carter served as a doctor in the U.S. Army until he was honorably discharged in 1960 at the rank of Captain. After serving his country “Jack” practiced internal medicine at Depaul Hospital and Christian Hospitals in St. Louis, Mo. He was Chief of Staff at DePaul for several years and was a member of the medical staff for the St. Louis City Police for 25 years. Dr. Carter loved listening to classical music, reading Shakespeare and sharing his love of boating and being on the water at Lake of the Ozarks with his family. He also enjoyed cheering on the St. Louis Football Cardinals with his vociferous friends and besting all of us who dared to challenge him at the Scrabble board. During his retirement years he filled much of his time with the joys and happiness of being around his grown children and grandchildren. Dr. Carter will be fondly remembered and forever missed. A memorial Mass celebrating Dr. Carter’s life will take place June 23, 11:00 AM at Annunciation Catholic Church, followed by interment at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. The family requests any memorial donations be made to the St. Louis University Medical School James F King Chair in Gastroenterology Fund (#30761).

Your father was always so kind to me, I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My father could not tell me enough about what a fantastic individual he was., he truly loved him like a brother and I am glad they are together again! I have always held your family in the highest esteem and you are all in my prayers.
