Arlo Hasselbring

ARLO H. HASSELBRING

December 30, 1922 – June 3, 2016

Arlo Hauck Hasselbring began life December 30, 1922 in St Louis, MO, the oldest child of Arlo L. and Vera M. Hasselbring. He was baptized March 11, 1923 in St Luke’s Evangelical Church. The family was joined some years later by his only sibling, a younger brother, Walt. Tragedy struck the family when, at the age of 11, Arlo’s father was killed in an automobile accident. With the Depression in full swing, Arlo soon took his first job to help support the family, while continuing to pursue his education. He attended Mann grade school followed by Roosevelt High School, graduating in 1941. While working full time, he attended night school at Washington University, receiving a BS in Economics in 1952 followed by an MBA in 1959.

He met Carol Elizabeth Dau through the Lutheran Collegiate Association and they married on September 16, 1949 after a whirlwind courtship. Their marriage lasted 52 years (until her death 12/21/2001) and produced 4 children: Caryn Grace, Arlo Tim, Christine Ann and Cheryl Beth. Devoted to his family, they took yearly vacations, sometimes by train but usually in the family car, to Camp Pioneer or Arcadia in the early days, then later to Eagle River, WI or Deer Valley Ranch, CO where the family enjoyed fishing, hiking, trail riding and just being together. Later destinations would include Montreal, Boston, Washington DC and San Francisco. He also loved classical music, often taking the family to the St. Louis Symphony or Philharmonic.

His work career started as a mail boy for the IL Terminal Railroad. He continued in various positions with the Missouri Pacific and was eventually Executive Secretary to the St. Louis Association of Railroad Superintendents. After receiving his MBA, he started his 30 years with Washington University in St. Louis where he was initially par-time Economics faculty, Facilities Manager and later Chief Controller. He retired as Chief Controller Emeritus in 1989. During his working career he was an active member of the National Association of College and Business Officers (NACUBO), for which he served multiple terms as President.

After retirement, he and Carol moved from their St. Louis home to Columbia, IL. They traveled to Europe and Israel. They celebrated the arrival of 7 grandchildren: Ryan, Connor, and Lauren Jenkins; Joel II, Jacob, and Adam Brown; Arlo Luke Hasselbring. There were family trips to Sanibel Island, FL. He enjoyed gardening, proud of the vegetables he would plant yearly. He enjoyed lending his financial expertise to various boards for Christian organizations and The Missouri Synod. After his wife’s death he continued to live in their house in Columbia where he remained until his death. He was an avid Cardinals baseball fan, preferring radio to TV broadcasts. His children and grandchildren were a continued source of enjoyment.

He attended church regularly until his final illness. Over the years he and Carol were active members of Messiah, Ascension, Concordia Kirkwood and finally Peace Lutheran Churches. Together they studied God’s Word through participation in the Bible Study Fellowship program. He died peacefully after a long illness. His life was a testament to his values: work, family, frugality, and above all, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. After this service he will be interred at Our Redeemer Cemetery.
