Stanley Douglas Brown passed away on January 12, 2022 after a brief illness. He was 74 years old and lived in Town and Country. He was born in Los Angeles, and lived many years in Tulsa before moving to St. Louis.
After a 1996 car accident while reporting for military duty paralyzed him, Mr. Brown was medically retired and became very active in lobbying for the rights of disabled veterans. He served in various leadership roles in the Paralyzed Veterans of America organization, frequently traveling to veteran conferences and lobbying trips to Washington DC. He had several articles on legal and disability issues published in law, scholarly, and military publications. He served three years on the Missouri Governor’s Council on Disability.
He earned a BA from the University of Oklahoma, a JD from Georgetown University Law Center, and an MBA from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. As an attorney, he served in the court systems of St. Louis City and County. He served as the Circuit Court Administrator for the City of St. Louis in the 1980s. He was the Deputy Director of the Missouri Department of Corrections in the Mel Carnahan Administration.
He served in Thailand during the Vietnam Era, and later served in the U.S. Army Reserve’s Judge Advocate General Corps, rising to the rank of Colonel. He was an adjunct professor of legal studies at Webster University for many years and belonged to the Webster Groves Presbyterian Church.
One of his proudest accomplishments was helping make the Soldiers Memorial building more accessible to veterans. His story is incorporated into the museum exhibit there today.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Selma (Chumly) Brown, by his sister Sharon, and by his dear cousin Nancy Theising. He is survived by his loving aunt, June George of St. Louis, his dear cousin, Susan (Tim) Andrews of Des Peres, and dear “nephews” Evan Theising, Jack Andrews, Joe Andrews, and Blake Andrews. He was our dear cousin, “uncle,” comrade, and friend to many.
Visitation will be January 17, 2022, at 11 a.m., at Kutis Funeral Home, 10151 Gravois Road, St. Louis MO 63123. Funeral will follow immediately thereafter at 12 noon at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gateway Chapter, Paralyzed Veterans of America, 1311 Lindbergh Plaza Center, St. Louis MO 63132.
I have had the life changing pleasure of knowing Stan for more than 16 years. He was always a mentor when it came to advocating for disability rights. He amazed me because a person with his level of disability is not supposed to do the things and travel the way he did. I will miss his sarcasm and his insight as he made a lifelong impression on me and my career of assisting veterans. Until I see you again…

So incredibly saddened to learn of the loss of Stan… he was a Memorial HS classmate and a very special giant of a man…Such a talented man with a good heart and loved by so many.

Stan and I weathered freshman year at OU and, with my wife, Elise, three years of law school at Georgetown together. His wit, enthusiasm, integrity, adherence to principle and patriotism together with the optimism and real joy he brought to any situation added direction and color to our lives. You will be missed by so many whose lives you touched. Be in peace, my friend. This is to Susan Andrews..I, Elise Hood, was the college and graduate roommate of Judith Mosedale. She called us to give us the sad news. Stan will be so very much missed. Jim and I were the ones who fixed Judy and Stan up. We send you hugs and kisses for being a good family to Stan. That’s what he would have wanted.

I worked as a coordinator in the Legal Studies Department at Webster University for ten years and Stan was one of my favorite instructors to work with. Stan was unfailingly kind, generous with his time, and always ready with a quick and sharp wit. This is such a terrible loss for Webster University Legal Studies students past, present and future. RIP Stan.
I worked for Stan many years as his attendant. His passion for helping disabled veterans was inspiring. Stan never said goodbye instead he would say see ya, he was a softie where children were concerned and he loved a good cigar. See ya Stan
I only knew Stan from our very brief encounters at the Gateway Chapter office.
I admired the work he did and the articles he wrote and wished I had lived closer
to be more involved. He will be a hard person to replace.

Stan was our neighbor. He was always interested in helping make our neighborhood better. We always saw him enjoying his afternoon cigar in the sun on nice days. He will be greatly missed.
Stan served as the contact for the transition from my first USAR unit – the Reserve Component Personnel and Administration Center, into the 8th JAG Detachment. He swore me into the JAG Corps on 12/29/1986 and was my first team leader. I always respected and admired Stan and enjoyed his keen sense of humor. Stan’s drive to continue serving after his disabling auto accident is nothing short of extraordinary. I feel indebted to this man who I hold in the highest regard.
I am very saddened by Stan leaving this planet , but I am delighted that he no longer will be physically limited
in an earthly body.
He told me to never , ever give up
because God has more work to be done !
He said there is no time for any pity nor regrets !
He said we will never be anywhere
close to being perfect. , but what matters
is that we are content , doing whatever God intends for us .
What an inspiration he is !

My condolences to Stan’s family, he always spoke so fondly of all of you. I had the honor of working side by side with Stan in the Gateway PVA office for 10 years. The sad news reached me today of his passing. It was such a shock, as we had just spoken on the phone for his birthday and he seemed to be doing so well. It always warmed my heart whenever he said “hey you” to me in such a raspy, loving tone. He made it feel like those two words were ours and ours alone. I loved Stan. He worked tirelessly for the veterans, coming in to our office every single day and visiting the spinal cord injury unit at Jefferson Barracks weekly. He ran a tight ship when I was around, but understandably the pandemic changed all of that. He was a good man and a hard act to follow … this world will never be the same without him.
Stan will be greatly missed. He was a passionate advocate for his fellow Veterans, especially those paralyzed Veterans. I consider him a strong partner in our making sure the entire community worked to provide Veterans all the support they need and earned. I will miss his wisdom, passion and friendship.
Stan was a pledge brother with me at the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house at the University of Oklahoma. He was not only the leader of our pledge class but the leader of our house during our membership. Everyone respected and loved Stan and I hope to meet with you for eternity when I leave this earth!
It’s hard to believe that’s it has been over a year already.
I lived with Stanley and helped take care of him during his last two years, and he is sorely missed. We think about him all the time, we reminisce weekly, and still tough for us to process. He welcomed my partner into his home when he found out we were expecting, and one of his last, best days he got to hold our baby.
