Nadia M. (Cottrell) Beaty, known to family and friends as Judy, died on January 3, 2022, at her home in Crestwood MO. Judy was born in the Philippines in 1938 to Floyd Cottrell and Nadia Agafonova Cottrell. As World War II found its way to the Philippines, Judy’s Father told his wife to bring the children to Missouri if anything happened to him. Floyd Cottrell died as a prisoner of war and Nadia brought Judy and her older brother Roger to the United States in July 1946.

Judy grew up in south St. Louis attending Longfellow grade school and Southwest high school. She met Don Beaty through mutual friends and after seeing him one evening at the White Castle at Hampton and Chippewa agreed to a date. Don has admitted that on their first date he had to borrow a few dollars from her because he was a little short to pay the dinner bill. Apparently, he paid her back, because she married him in 1961 and they shared 60 years together.

Judy was an avid gardener who won the Mehlville Garden Club Yard of the Month several years ago which included a Citation of Commendation from the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri. She was a lover of nature, birds, and animals. She loved puttering in her beautifully landscaped backyard, watching the tiny house wrens nesting with their babies or the hummingbirds buzzing around her flowers and feeders.

Judy was always active. She took up tennis in her thirties and played into her seventies. She and Don took many bike trips to Europe exploring the countryside in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands among other countries. The bike riding continued on Sanibel Island. She and Don discovered Sanibel about 25 years ago and she loved the weeks they spent there in the winter. She was happiest wandering the beach looking for shells, enjoying the warm sunshine and the company of the many friends they made there.

Judy was also avid at making and maintaining friendships. She maintained friends from the high school days at Southwest. She had friends from her tennis group and her fellow gardeners. The monthly Friday night couple’s dinner group included friends she and Don had for many years and was always a get together she enjoyed. She lived more than 40 years at their home in Crestwood and developed some very close, lasting and important friendships in the neighborhood.

She will be greatly missed by her husband of 60 years, Donald D. Beaty, daughter Cathleen Beaty, son Donald Claburn Beaty, grandson Taylor Beaty, niece Terri Beaty and husband Larry Pleimann and other family and friends. She was often seen walking or in the yard with Fuji, the dog she and Don brought home 12 years ago. Fuji will miss the love and attention she showered upon him.
